4 Different PC Case Types: A Guide to Form Factors

The world has moved from proprietary technologies to standardization. The PC case types are challenging to understand. There are no specifications or dimensional constraints associated with form factors. They are mostly associated with the motherboard compatibility. In 1995, Intel came up with the ATX standard, which was later on converted into the motherboard standard. PC case manufacturers may design a high volume PC case, but may only have mounting for a mATX motherboard.

This article is meant to clear the confusion and provide a solid basis on which buyers can rely. We will focus on the tower PC cases as they are the most dominant portion of the computer case market. Let's dive right into the four primary form factors of modern PC cases.

The PC case types are challenging to understand

Four Primary Form Factors

Mini-ITX

For a PC case to be called Mini-ITX, it has to fit a motherboard that is 170 x 170 mm. It is a perfect square. Since the dimensions are controlled as per VIA Technologies, the cases are meant to have more power within a small space. A typical Mini-ITX case will have a volume of less than 20 liters.

Since the size constraints are too tight, there are some specific requirements for the computer case:

  • PCIe Riser: to ensure that a modern, powerful graphics card fits inside shoebox like dimensions, an extension cable is used. It prevents the two components from blowing hot air over each other.
  • Unique Power Supply: While the dimensions of a Mini-ITX case are small, it needs to fit a high wattage power supply. They mostly require SFX or SFX-L PSU form factor instead of the ATX.
  • RAM: Since the dimensions are always tight, you are limited to only 2 RAM slots.
  • Mesh Panel: These cases often have sufficient openings to allow air to flow smoothly across the case to keep the components cool.
  • AIO Units: 240mm liquid cooling is ideal for Mini-ITX. It allows high-TDP chips to prevent thermal throttling.

Micro-ATX

Manufacturers labelling their PC case as Micro-ATX are referring to the 244 x 244 mm micro Advanced Technology eXtended (mATX) motherboard. It is a big step up for hardware compatibility and ease of assembly. It also means that you can now install four RAM slots and extra PCIe lanes.

Here are some of the key features that make mATX cases a go to choice for most gamers.

  • Backward Compatibility: An mATX form factor does not mean that you cannot install a mini-ITX motherboard inside it. The case is fully backward compatible, giving flexibility to the PC builders.
  • Clearance for GPUs: The volume available in the micro-ATX form factor allows designers to leave more space for the GPU clearance. Some cases can house a graphic card as long as 415mm.
  • Fishtank Design: Most of the modern cases are built as an aesthetic showcase. They often have a 270 degree full view of all the parts inside the case. To keep the storage drive cables out of view, they sometimes have hidden storage trays behind the motherboard.

Mid-Tower

It is the most sold form factor in the PC case industry. It can handle an ATX motherboard with 305 x 244 mm dimensions. It is the industry standard for the availability of space. Users have enough volume to install parts and cables within a reasonable desk footprint. Owing to their size, they can house a combination of cooling matrices.

Mid-tower cases have a balanced structure that unlocks tons of potential. Let's discuss some of its key features:

  • Cooling Fans: A mid-tower PC case can handle 12 individual 12mm fans. They are often installed in a push and pull configuration to maximize cooling capacity.
  • Connectivity: As there is a larger surface area, designers use it to provide a robust I/O suite. These can have USB-C Gen 2 ports and integrated digital monitoring displays for live monitoring.
  • Robust Material: Owing to their large volume, they are made with premium material to ensure structure integrity. A 0.7mm SPCC steel and 4mm tempered glass is a typical choice by most manufacturers.
  • Ease of Access: These are great for first time PC builders as they can easily move internal hardware and fit components. They often come with glass panels to ensure unobstructed access to the motherboard from the front and back.

Full Tower

For PC builders who like to convey a solid statement through their PC case, utilize a full tower. These are utilized by professionals and enthusiasts to push PC performance to the limits. Full towers are giant 25 inch tall structures that can house an E-ATX or XL-ATX motherboard. These massive boards allow fitting dual-GPU and massive storage options.

PC builders and enthusiasts use this PC form factor for the following reasons:

  • Thermal Headroom: As there is a large volume of air inside the PC case, it acts like a buffer to absorb temperature spikes that occur when the load increases on the PC components. These can comfortably house massive 420mm radiators and 140mm fans.
  • Integration: There are special slots that allow storage drives to be plugged in and pulled out while the computer is still on. These typically have a massive hidden chamber that is 34mm deep, hiding away all the wires.
  • TDP Support: As these PC cases are made for future-proof builds, they can house powerful PSUs that can supply power demanding components. They can handle graphics cards that pull 600W+ electricity to operate.
  • Triple Chamber: Dividing the whole volume into three separate sections allows cooling advantage. The graphics card, power supply, and CPU are all heat generating components that are kept separately in their thermal zones for heat removal efficiency.

 Vital Back-To-the-Future (BTF) Support

Vital Back-To-the-Future (BTF) Support

One of the most trending features that has been standardized by multiple motherboard manufacturers is BTF support. All the form factors, irrespective of their size, should feature BTF supporting specifications. Means that the computer case should have a passthrough option on the motherboard tray. The connector should pass through comfortably at various locations.

  • Top Edge: The 8-pin connector passes through to feed electricity to the processor.
  • Right Edge: It accommodates the thickest 24-pin ATX main power connector.
  • Bottom Edge: These are tiny connectors for front panel audio, USB 2.0, etc.
  • GPU Power Slot: In advanced BTF, it allows proprietary specialized cutouts to allow connection to power demanding GPUs.

Conclusion

Selecting the right PC form factor is vital. If you are a beginner and pick mini-ITX for a DIY build, then you will face tons of challenges. In comparison, a mid-tower PC case would be a more convenient and budget friendly option. The choice is usually finding the balance between budget, thermal potential, aesthetics, and versatility. You can go for any of the form factors, but always consider the thermodynamic isolation and structural reinforcement features. They keep the computer components safe from thermal throttling or damage.
